Pregnancy is a period of rapid growth and development for the fetus

which places higher physiological, metabolic, and emotional demands on the mother

Food intake during pregnancy needs to be free from food safety hazards and contribute to the health and wellbeing of the mother • Receiving good nutrition in the womb and through early life is essential for a child's future health. Research has shown that what a mother eats, her weight and her lifestyle habits can influence how the baby's metabolism, immune system and organs develop. Poor nutrition during pregnancy and early life can lead to obesity, heart disease and stroke later on.

The First 1000 Days

What you need to know

Starting from Preconception

There is growing research and evidence to suggest that early experiences in the first 1000 days of life are significant to a child’s overall wellbeing and development. During preconception, both parents’ health can impact the chance of conceiving a healthy embryo.

Pregnancy Phase (the first 275 Days)

In pregnancy, a mother’s diet and her nutrient stores are the only sources of nutrition for her developing baby. If she does not get the required nutrients to support her baby’s development, there is a high risk for developmental delays, congenital disabilities, and cognitive deficits. Key nutrients such as folate, iron and iodine are essential to the early development of the brain and spine in the pregnancy phase.

Postnatal Phase (the first 500 Days)

In infancy, breast milk contains a variety of nutrients, growth factors and hormones that are vital for a child’s early brain development. Helping to support a mother to ensure her milk contains all the required nutrients for her baby without depleting her energy stores is of paramount importance. For non-breastfeeding mothers, guidance on the best formulas and ways to keep their energy levels stable is vital to the well-being of their baby

Early Childhood (the complete 700 days)

In early childhood, a child’s brain grows at a faster rate than any other stage of life. A toddler’s brain has up to twice as many synapses as it will have in adulthood. Food provides the fuel for much of the extraordinary brain development that takes place in early childhood, and nutrition during this period remains critically important. In particular, protein, iron, zinc and iodine are essential to the toddler’s rapidly developing brain. Iron plays a significant role in brain development throughout the first 1,000 days. The damage done by iron deficiency in pregnancy and the first 2 years of a child’s life can be irreversible.

Infancy (the full 1000 Days)

Children ages 1 to 3 require 7mg -13mg of iron daily, and unless toddlers are fed meat or other iron-rich foods, they are unlikely to consume enough iron. Iron deficiency in infants and toddlers can lead to impaired learning, social and emotional delays, including less social interaction and alertness, increased irritability, wariness and inhibited behaviours, and less interest in play. Iron deficiency also appears to affect the brain’s neurochemistry, and studies have shown that early iron deficiency is associated with higher levels of anxiety and depression later in life.
